MESSAGGIO DI AVVENTO 2023 DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIATICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle,

Il tempo di „Avvento”, è sempre un dono prezioso per noi credenti, che siamo chiamati a prepararci al Natale aprendo il nostro cuore ad accogliere il Signore che viene.

Siamo invitati a fissare il nostro sguardo non su un incerto futuro sempre meno prevedibile e programmabile, ma su Gesù Cristo nell’attesa della sua venuta.

La speranza cristiana ci impedisce di guardare alla storia in maniera fatalistica e ci aiuta a vivere il nostro impegno nel mondo con coraggio e con fiducia. Noi cristiani guardiamo al futuro senza timore, perché le radici della nostra speranza affondano nel cuore stesso di Dio.

La nostra non è solo attesa, ma anche memoria di uno che è già venuto nel mistero del Natale che ci apprestiamo a celebrare e certezza della presenza di Cristo che cammina con noi, al nostro fianco.

Attesa è avere fame e sete di felicità, rivolgere gli occhi e tendere le mani al Signore che viene. In tutti noi c’è una aspirazione alla pace, alla gioia, alla giustizia, al perdono, alla salvezza. Questi beni li possiamo avere non con le nostre sole forze, ma con l’aiuto della grazia di Dio.

„Se tu squarciassi i cieli e scendessi!“(Is 63, 19) è la preghiera in questo tempo di Avvento, è l’invocazione di chi sa leggere la storia e non si rassegna di fronte ai segnali di morte. È la nostra preghiera, ma è soprattutto quella dei tanti che aspettano qualcuno che li salvi.

Essere cristiani è rimanere sempre aperti all’attesa della novità di Dio che può sconvolgere la nostra vita.

È triste una società senza l’Avvento, senza il desiderio di una maggiore giustizia, di una maggiore solidarietà, di una pace più larga e più stabile.

Noi siamo chiamati ad essere sempre disponibili al disegno di Dio capace di rinnovare la faccia della terra.

Il tempo dell’attesa è il tempo della speranza, ma è necessario riconoscersi peccatori per sperimentare la gioia del perdono e l’abbraccio della misericordia del Padre.           

Il peccato più grave è non attendere nessuno, vivere nella rassegnazione passiva e nella paura senza una speranza viva nella novità che viene da Dio.

A partire dall’amore gratuito che il Signore ci concede siamo chiamati a vivere nell’amicizia col Signore Gesù e con il nostro prossimo ed a vivere in una vigilanza operosa e gioiosa ed in una fedeltà responsabile e piena di speranza.

Gesù ci ripete nel vangelo:“ Fate attenzione, vegliate, non sapete quando è il momento“(Mc 13,33). Gesù paragona il credente a un portinaio che deve attendere il ritorno del padrone: egli sta accanto alla porta, non si addormenta, anche se è notte, finché non sia tornato il padrone di casa. La porta alla soglia della quale vegliare è quella del cuore. Purtroppo, il nostro cuore talora è così pieno di sé stesso e così stordito dalle proprie faccende da non sentire né i passi né la voce del Signore che bussa. „Ecco, dice il Signore, io sto alla porta e busso. Se qualcuno ascolta la mia voce e mi apre la porta, io verrò da lui, cenerò con lui ed egli con me“ (Ap 3, 20).

Nell’avvento il Signore viene incontro a noi. Se il Signore viene – noi siamo chiamati ad andargli incontro con la nostra conversione, la nostra adesione alla buona notizia della sua grazia, le nostre opere di misericordia conseguenza dell’esperienza di questo amore gratuito e misericordioso.

C’è una giustizia da ricercare, c’è una carità da realizzare soprattutto verso i poveri, i malati, i lebbrosi. Siamo chiamati a lasciare questa nostra terra migliore di come l’abbiamo trovata.

Il Signore che viene oggi e il Figlio dell’uomo che tornerà alla fine dei tempi ci aiuti a guardare tutte le cose a partire dal loro fine ultimo e ci dia la forza di essere vigilanti nell’attesa ed assidui nella preghiera, operosi nella carità pronti ogni giorno a convertirci e ad essere testimoni della buona notizia dell’amore di Dio verso tutti.

ADVENT MESSAGE 2023 FROM THE ECCLESIATIC GRAND PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEMM

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The season of „Advent“ is always a precious gift for us believers, who are called to prepare for Christmas by opening our hearts to welcome the Lord who is coming.

We are invited to fix our gaze not on an uncertain future that is less and less predictable and programmable, but on Jesus Christ as we await his coming.

Christian hope prevents us from looking at history in a fatalistic way and helps us to live our engagement in the world with courage and confidence. We Christians look to the future without fear, because the roots of our hope lie in the very heart of God.

Ours is not only expectation, but also remembrance of one who has already come in the mystery of the Christmas we are about to celebrate, and certainty of the presence of Christ who walks with us, at our side.

Waiting is to hunger and thirst for happiness, to turn our eyes and stretch out our hands to the coming Lord. In all of us there is an aspiration for peace, joy, justice, forgiveness, salvation. We can have these goods not by our own strength, but with the help of God’s grace.

„If thou wouldst rend the heavens and descend!“(Is 63:19) is the prayer at this time of Advent, it is the invocation of those who know how to read history and who do not resign themselves to the signs of death. It is our prayer, but it is above all that of the many who are waiting for someone to save them.

To be a Christian is to always remain open to waiting for the newness of God that can shake our lives.

It is sad a society without Advent, without the desire for greater justice, greater solidarity, greater and more stable peace.

We are called to always be available to God’s plan capable of renewing the face of the earth.

The time of waiting is the time of hope, but it is necessary to recognise ourselves as sinners in order to experience the joy of forgiveness and the embrace of the Father’s mercy.           

The greatest sin is not to wait for anyone, to live in passive resignation and fear without a living hope in the newness that comes from God.

Starting from the free love that the Lord grants us, we are called to live in friendship with the Lord Jesus and our neighbour, and to live in an industrious and joyful vigilance and in a responsible and hopeful fidelity.

Jesus repeats to us in the gospel: ‚Be careful, be vigilant, you do not know when it is time‘ (Mk 13:33). Jesus compares the believer to a porter who has to wait for the master’s return: he stands by the door, he does not fall asleep, even if it is night, until the master of the house has returned. The door at the threshold of which to keep watch is that of the heart. Unfortunately, our heart is sometimes so full of itself and so dazed by its own affairs that it hears neither the footsteps nor the voice of the Lord knocking. „Behold, says the Lord, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come to him, I will dine with him, and he with me“ (Rev 3:20).

In Advent, the Lord comes to meet us. If the Lord comes – we are called to meet him with our conversion, our adherence to the good news of his grace, our works of mercy as a consequence of experiencing this gratuitous and merciful love.

There is a justice to be sought, there is a charity to be realised especially towards the poor, the sick, the lepers. We are called to leave this land of ours better than we found it.

May the Lord who comes today, and the Son of Man who will return at the end of time, help us to look at all things from their ultimate end, and give us the strength to be vigilant in expectation and assiduous in prayer, industrious in charity, ready each day to convert and to be witnesses of the good news of God’s love for all.
