Carissimo fratello in Cristo

Santità, amato fratello in Cristo,

EXCHANGE OF MESSAGES BETWEEN THE POPE OF ROME AND THE POPE OF ALEXANDRIA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 9TH DAY OF FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN COPTS AND CATHOLICS

(One of the meetings between Pope Francis and Pope Tawadros)

On 10 May 2022, on the occasion of the 9th Day of Friendship between Copts and Catholics, the customary exchange of messages between the Pope of Rome and the Pope of Alexandria took place.

Message of greetings from His Holiness Pope Tawadros II to His Holiness Pope Francis

Dearest Brother in Christ

His Holiness Pope Francis

It is my pleasure to be able to wish Your Holiness the resurrection of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who by his death destroyed our death and by his resurrection raised us.

It is the resurrection of Christ that guides us to endure suffering, as was said by the prophets: „Christ was to suffer, and who, first among those raised from the dead, would proclaim the light to the people and to the Gentiles“ (Acts of the Apostles 26:23). That light enlightens us to know him and experience him in our lives, every day and every hour, so Paul the Apostle: „that I may know him, the power of his resurrection, the fellowship of his sufferings, making me conform to his death“ (Philippians 3:10).

I also ask for your health dearest Holiness, I pray to our good and loving God to give you as much strength and health as you have spiritually, and to grant you long life full of good fruits: thirty, sixty and a hundred.

As part of our celebration of the Day of Brotherly Love, on 10 May each year, I congratulate Your Holiness and the entire Catholic Church; I also congratulate my Coptic Church on this day of remembrance, which has become a tradition, because it is according to the heart of the Lord Jesus: „For the love of Christ possesses us; and we know well that one died for all, therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and rose again for them.“ (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)

With this fraternal celebration, the love of Christ appears in us, and outlines us. Our celebration remains linked to the time of Easter, during which Christ’s love for all of us was manifested.

Our joy is increased on this day this year because it comes after a long standstill over the past two years due to the spread of the pandemic, which has affected the entire world and claimed millions of lives and injured hundreds of millions. May the Lord Christ save Your Holiness from all evil.

Love stops at no boundary, but extends to encompass our society in which we live together, Christians and Muslims in mutual love, both at the grassroots and institutional level.

The Family House is an institution that unites Christian and Islamic men and women of thought and influence with the aim of achieving closeness and understanding depicted in a framework of love. On the other hand, the efforts of the Council of Churches of Egypt struggle to coordinate between the various Churches in Egypt to unify the work of service to our society and to spread the culture of love and peace in it. I also ask Your Holiness to pray deeply for the success of the meeting of the General Assembly of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), which will be held this month in Egypt and is the first time it will be hosted by our Coptic Orthodox Churches.

Let us pray and ask in faith for the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of All, and Pride of Our Race, the Blessed Virgin Mary, that the meeting will succeed in developing the spirit of love and peace, especially in areas of conflict, not only in the Middle East, but throughout the world and in the Ukrainian crisis, which we hope will soon end.

Therefore, when the time comes: „Let us therefore draw near with full confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace, that we may be helped at the proper time“ (Hebrews 4:16)

Having this same desire to advance with courage before the throne of grace and with a good conscience before Christ, let us strive with all our might to face the contemporary weaknesses and evils that are increasing day by day due to the world turning away from the sun of righteousness, the Lord Jesus; turning the world in on itself in great darkness, not recognising directions, but drowning in distorting the sublime human nature which is in the image and likeness of God, creating delusional beliefs about homosexuality, impure relationships, transgenderism, family disintegration and atheism.

„Indeed, his invisible perfections, that is, his eternal power and divinity, are contemplated and understood from the creation of the world through the works he has performed. They, therefore, have no excuse …While they declared themselves wise, they became foolish“ (Romans 1:20-22).

That is why I also ask Your Holiness to pray much with us that God will remove these evils from the world and send servants for the harvest of his many generations; Servants of the Word who will enlighten the world with the light of his resurrection and lead generations by example and love. Generations, for whose salvation we are responsible before the Saviour. We pray for the servants who will proceed in the example of their Master with humility and unconditional love. Let us pray for servants in whom „For the word of God is living, and effective, and sharper than any two-edged sword; it penetrates even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, even to the joints and marrow, and discerns the feelings and thoughts of the heart“ (Hebrews 4:12).

Finally, I renew my best wishes to Your Holiness for Resurrection Day and the Day of Brotherly Love, wishing you a peaceful Easter and abundant health. And I pray for you, for I trust that you also pray for my weakness.

Message of greetings from His Holiness Pope Francis to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II

To His Holiness Tawadros II

Pope of Alexandria

Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark

Your Holiness, beloved brother in Christ

The ninth Day of Friendship between Copts and Catholics offers me once again the auspicious occasion to express my heartfelt gratitude for the spiritual bonds that unite the See of Peter and the See of Mark, and to assure you of my unfailing friendship in Christ.

Mindful of Christ’s words – „You are my friends if you do what I command you“ (Jn 15:14) – we continue our pilgrimage of Christian brotherhood, especially in preparation for next year’s celebration of the tenth anniversary of our memorable meeting in Rome and the fiftieth anniversary of the historic meeting between Pope Paul VI and Pope Shenouda III.

Friendship is the surest way to achieve unity among Christians, because in it we see the face of Christ himself, who calls us no longer servants but friends (cf. Jn 15:15) and who prays that „all may be one“ (Jn 17:21). May the intercession of St Athanasius, whose life and teaching inspire both our Churches, guide us on our journey towards full visible communion.

Dear brother in Christ, as we approach the feast of Pentecost, I pray that the Holy Spirit will unite us ever more closely and grant his gifts of consolation to our suffering human family, especially in these days of pandemic and war.

With the assurance of my continued spiritual closeness, I offer prayerful good wishes for your well-being and serenity, and cordially exchange with Your Holiness a fraternal embrace of peace in the Risen Lord.

Pope Francis
