RITO DI CHIUSURA DELLA SETTIMANA DI PREGHIERA PER L’UNITA’ DEI CRISTIANI ED INVESTITURA DI DUE VESCOVI

(Basilica Abbaziale di San Martino delle Scale, VI sec – 1595)

Avrà luogo presso la Basilica Abbaziale di San Martino delle Scale, alle ore 18.30 del 23 gennaio 2022, il rito di chiusura della Settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani, durante il quale sarà pure celebrata l’investitura di due Vescovi non cattolici che entreranno a fare parte dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro.

La tradizione vuole il primitivo monastero di San Martino fondato da papa Gregorio I nel VI secolo. L’Abbazia fu rasa al suolo dai Saraceni nel 820 e ricostruita in epoca normanna. L’atto di rifondazione del 1347, redatto dalla cancelleria di Emanuele Spinola arcivescovo di Monreale, attesta la ricostruzione in epoca medievale.

Il primo Abate fu Angelo Sinisio, dal 26 luglio 1352 al 27 novembre del 1386. Federico IV di Sicilia elargisce concessioni, ed anche Papa Gregorio XI concede alcune prerogative.

Nel 1564 ha inizio la riedificazione dell’attuale chiesa abbaziale, termine dei lavori nel 1595. L’Abate occupava il 50° seggio del Parlamento di Sicilia.

Con l’emanazione delle leggi eversive, la confisca dei beni del 1866 e la conseguente spoliazione del patrimonio storico – artistico causano il declino dell’istituzione, riducendo la comunità monastica ormai decimata e indebolita.

Nel 1946, raggiunto il numero di monaci previsto dalle Costituzioni cassinesi, è determinato il ripristino di alcune attività proprie della comunità monastica, la quale prenderà sede in una parte dell’antico complesso monumentale: l’insegnamento nel collegio e nell’alunnato monastico, l’allestimento di un laboratorio di restauro del libro, l’apertura al pubblico della ricostituita biblioteca e la rivendita di alcuni prodotti tipici del monastero.

L’attuale Abate di San Martino delle Scale è il Molto Reverendo Dom Vittorio Rizzone, OSB, recentemente ammesso nell’Ordine di San Lazzaro e che nella prossima estate riceverà l’investitura alla presenza dell’Abate Primate Emerito dei benedettini, Dom Notker Wolf, anch’egli membro dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro.

Durante il rito avrà luogo la cerimonia di investitura di due Vescovi che nello scorso mese di luglio non avevano potuto presenziare a causa dell’emergenza sanitaria. Si tratta di Sua Eccellenza il Molto Reverendo Kevin Francis Donlon, Vescovo Ausiliare della Diocesi Anglicana di Zanzibar e Vicario Episcopale del Prefetto dell’Unione Anglicana per la diffusione del Vangelo, una confraternita sotto l’autorità del Concistoro dei Vescovi in comunione con la Sede di Canterbury, con l’incarico di coordinatore di tutti i dialoghi ecumenici; e di Sua Eccellenza il Molto Reverendo Ottar Svein Mikael Myrseth, Vescovo Ordinario della Diocesi scandinava della Nordic Catholic Church (Unione di Scranton).

CLOSING RITE OF THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY AND INVESTITURE OF TWO BISHOPS

The closing rite of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will take place at the Abbey Basilica of San Martino delle Scale at 6.30 p.m. on 23 January 2022, during which the investiture of two non-Catholic bishops who will become members of the Order of St Lazarus will also be celebrated.

Tradition has it that the primitive monastery of St Martin was founded by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century. The Abbey was razed to the ground by the Saracens in 820 and rebuilt in Norman times. The act of re-foundation of 1347, drawn up by the chancellery of Emanuele Spinola, archbishop of Monreale, attests to the reconstruction in medieval times.

The first Abbot was Angelo Sinisio, from 26 July 1352 to 27 November 1386. Frederick IV of Sicily bestowed concessions, and Pope Gregory XI also granted some prerogatives.

In 1564, the rebuilding of the present abbey church began, and work was completed in 1595. The Abbot occupied the 50th seat in the Parliament of Sicily.

With the enactment of the subversive laws, the confiscation of property in 1866 and the consequent spoliation of the historical and artistic heritage caused the decline of the institution, with the monastic community now decimated and weakened.

In 1946, having reached the number of monks envisaged by the Cassinese Constitutions, it was decided to re-establish some of the monastic community’s own activities, which were to be based in a part of the ancient monumental complex: teaching in the college and in the monastic alumniate, setting up a book restoration workshop, opening the re-established library to the public and selling some of the monastery’s typical products.

The current Abbot of San Martino delle Scale is the Very Reverend Dom Vittorio Rizzone, OSB, recently admitted into the Order of St Lazarus, who will receive his investiture next summer in the presence of the Abbot Primate Emeritus of the Benedictines, Dom Notker Wolf, also a member of the Order of St Lazarus.

During the ceremony there will be the investiture of two bishops who were unable to attend last July because of the health emergency. They are: His Excellency the Very Reverend Kevin Francis Donlon, Auxiliary Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Zanzibar and Episcopal Vicar to the Prefect of the Anglican Union for the Spreading of the Gospel, a brotherhood under the authority of the Consistory of Bishops in communion with the See of Canterbury, in charge of coordinating all ecumenical dialogues; and His Excellency the Very Reverend Ottar Svein Mikael Myrseth, Ordinary Bishop of the Scandinavian Diocese of the Nordic Catholic Church (Union of Scranton).
