MESSAGGIO DEL GRAN PRIORE ECCLESIASTICO DELL’ORDINE DI SAN LAZZARO DI GERUSALEMME PER LA SETTIMANA DI PREGHIERA PER L’UNITA’ DEI CRISTIANI 2023

Carissimi Confratelli e Consorelle dell’Ordine di San Lazzaro di Gerusalemme,

il Consiglio Consultivo Spirituale ha sottolineato l’importanza, per il nostro Ordine di natura ecumenica, di promuovere e partecipare ai momenti di preghiera per l’Unità dei cristiani ed altre iniziative ecumeniche e caritatevoli.

La data tradizionale per la celebrazione della Settimana di preghiera per l’unità dei cristiani, nell’emisfero nord, va dal 18 al 25 gennaio.

Il tema di quest’anno è “Imparate a fare il bene, cercate la giustizia” (Isaia 1, 17)”.

È questa perentoria affermazione del profeta Isaia che le sorelle e i fratelli del Minnesota (USA) pongono alla nostra riflessione per la preghiera comune di quest’anno. Nel brano che ci viene proposto, noi intravediamo come il linguaggio del profeta insista sul filo d’oro che unisce queste due realtà: rito e vita, culto ed esistenza, liturgia e giustizia, preghiera ed opere.

Il culto è celebrato cercando il volto di quel Dio che per primo ha scelto di legarsi al suo popolo. Ma il culto non può sostituire i doveri più elementari verso il prossimo, specialmente quando questo è debole e indifeso. Dio, anche quando le nostre strade di chiese si dividono, non manca mai di aprire nuove vie. Le sue vie sovrastano infatti le nostre (cfr Is 55, 9). Le chiese cristiane stanno da tempo imparando a rileggere in modo diverso quei passaggi in cui le rispettive strade si sono separate, per ricomprendere senso e prospettive dei fattori che vi hanno operato. Ripensare la memoria storica è soprattutto un’operazione di giustizia, che permette di scoprire prospettive inedite per rinnovare insieme le forme dell’annuncio dell’evangelo. Una dinamica di mutuo apprendimento, di ascolto attento della reciproca testimonianza resa all’unico Signore soppianta così la contrapposizione polemica che ci consegna la storia.

Noi cristiani, pur radicati nella nostra Chiesa che ci ha generati alla fede, siamo chiamati così a scoprire il mistero della comunione, da cui scaturisce la fraternità, tra di noi ritrovata al di là dei confini confessionali. Quando lavoriamo fianco a fianco prendiamo a modello la pace, la giustizia e la relazionalità che costituiscono il nucleo delle nostre convinzioni religiose, e allo stesso tempo ricreiamo e rafforziamo questi valori”.

Accogliamo dunque con riconoscenza la proposta dei fratelli e delle sorelle del Minnesota, facendo nostra la preghiera di Giovanni all’inizio del libro dell’Apocalisse: “Le cose qui scritte accadranno tra poco: beato dunque chi legge e chi ascolta questo messaggio profetico, e fa tesoro di quanto qui è scritto” (Ap 1, 3).

In occasione della 70^ Giornata mondiale di lotta alla lebbra (World Leprosy Day) che si celebrerà il prossimo 29 gennaio, il nostro Ordine è impegnato a porre fine alle disuguaglianze sociali affinché nessuno viva ai margini e ad assicurare a ogni persona protezione, inclusione e salute.

Vi auguro un buon Anno Nuovo nella pace, nella giustizia, nella solidarietà e nella fraternità.

MESSAGE OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL GRAND PRIOR OF THE ORDER OF SAINT LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM FOR THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR THE UNITY OF CHRISTIANS 2023

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem

the Spiritual Advisory Council has emphasised the importance, for our Order of an ecumenical nature, of promoting and participating in moments of prayer for Christian Unity and other ecumenical and charitable initiatives.

The traditional date for the celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, in the northern hemisphere, is 18-25 January.

This year’s theme is „Learn to do good, seek justice“ (Isaiah 1:17)“.

It is this peremptory statement from the prophet Isaiah that the sisters and brothers of Minnesota (USA) put to our reflection for this year’s common prayer. In the passage proposed to us, we glimpse how the prophet’s language insists on the golden thread that unites these two realities: ritual and life, worship and existence, liturgy and justice, prayer and works.

Worship is celebrated by seeking the face of the God who first chose to bind himself to his people. But worship cannot replace the most basic duties towards our neighbour, especially when the latter is weak and defenceless. God, even when our church ways part, never fails to open up new paths. For His ways are above ours (cf. Is 55:9). The Christian churches have been learning for some time now, to reread in a different way those passages in which their respective paths parted, in order to recomprehend the meaning and perspectives of the factors that worked there. Rethinking the historical memory is above all an operation of justice, which allows us to discover new perspectives to renew together the forms of the proclamation of the Gospel. A dynamic of mutual learning, of attentive listening to each other’s testimony to the one Lord thus supplants the polemical opposition that history gives us.

We Christians, while rooted in our Church that has generated us in faith, are thus called to discover the mystery of communion, from which fraternity springs, among us rediscovered beyond confessional boundaries. When we work side by side we model the peace, justice and relationality that are at the core of our religious convictions, and at the same time recreate and strengthen these values‘.

Let us therefore gratefully accept the proposal of our brothers and sisters in Minnesota, making our own the prayer of John at the beginning of the book of Revelation: ‚The things written here will shortly come to pass: blessed therefore is he who reads and hears this prophetic message, and treasures what is written here‘ (Rev 1:3).

On the occasion of the 70th World Leprosy Day (World Leprosy Day), which will be celebrated on 29 January next, our Order is committed to putting an end to social inequalities so that no one lives on the margins, and to ensuring that every person is protected, included and healthy.
